INTERCONTINENTAL BIOSPHERE RESERVE OF THE MEDITERRANEAN

“Our heart is split between two shores”.

Equipo Azituna

INTRODUCTION

With over a million hectares, this reserve occupies four times the surface area of the Guipúzcoa province, which, in addition to the fact it’s the only one of its kind to contain a sea – the Mediterranean – within its borders, makes it a verifiable continent of biodiversity and treasures beyond comparison. But this “place” is much more than that…
We find ourselves in a cultural melting pot but with places in common, where the tie people feel to the land (and to the sea) is unnegotiable, and the passing of time is measured in “sacas (uncorkings)” and the sun doesn’t leave scars on people’s faces, but rather “rivers of light”.
With its heart split between Andalusia and northern Morocco, protected by the UNESCO since 2006, this area has been blessed with some of the most privileged landscapes in the Mediterranean.
National parks like Talassemtane (Rif), natural parks like Alcornocales (Cadiz), cultural interest goods like the historic-artistic complex of Ronda (Malaga), biosphere reserves like Sierra de las Nieves (Malaga), sites of community interest like Genal Valley (Malaga) and a long list of natural monuments speak to its natural and cultural importance, while its people keep some of the millennia-old traditions from these lands alive.
