INTRODUCTION
Granada Geopark is a globally protected UNESCO site and one of the scenic gems we find in Andalusia, but its singularity and dramatic contrasts set it apart from other landscapes in our region.
From the skirt of the Sierra Nevada range to the first foothills of the Sierra de Cazorla a rolling, red and seemingly barren territory extends, one in which man settled several millennia ago, the so-called Badlands. The clay soil provided the basis for the proliferation of the famous cave houses we find here. These lands are also home to one of the largest megalithic parks in Europe, with nearly 250 dolmens and other highly valuable paleontological remains. Strolling through the valley of the River Fardes to the town of Gorafe, it’s easy to imagine we’ve travelled back in time.
Gorafe Desert is the hidden treasure of this area, a territory forgotten for decades that now begins to welcome visitors in search of a bit of solitude and unimaginable views.
We suggest you spend a few days in this area, to discover its unusual landscapes, in striking contrast to the green of Andalusia, its powerful history and its deeply rooted people, who have found a way to bring to light all the knowledge hidden in the bowels of this land. All of this through walking
tours and other activities, guided by local professionals who live in the territory and who can share with us some of the keys to better understand the geographic and human peculiarities we will find here.
